PPSD Summer Athletics Guidelines

Pearl Public School District

Summer Athletic Information

Listed below is information concerning athletes returning to sports beginning Tuesday, June 2:

  • Try-outs in all sports have been postponed until Covid-19 guidelines change to allow a fair opportunity for students. (When the ban on the sharing of equipment is lifted, we will be able to schedule try-outs.)
  • Summer training will begin Tuesday, June 2, for sports that normally meet in the summer. These sports are HS Football, HS Baseball, HS Fast-pitch, HS Volleyball, HS Soccer, HS XC, HS Track, HS Dance, HS Cheer, JH Basketball, JH Dance, JH Cheer, & JH Volleyball. (Other sports may schedule practices at a later date.)
  • Summer training will begin with students who were rostered on HS & JH teams last year. The coaches will contact the players on last years’ rosters to inform them of practice times and dates. (Dates may differ per sport.)
  • Physicals from last year will be allowed for the 2020-2021 school year by the Mississippi High School Athletic & Activity Association. (It is encouraged to get an annual physical before participation but not mandated.)
  • All 7th graders participating in athletics during the 2020-2021 school year will be required to have a physical before participating in summer training.
  • Attendance at summer training is not mandatory and will not prevent an athlete from participation or from the opportunity to try out when the school year begins. If an athlete is unable to attend training, the parent is asked to notify the head coach.
  • Parents or spectators will not be allowed at summer training or practice. Facilities will be open only to athletes and coaches.

Training & Practice Guidelines

  • Summer sports will follow the 14- day acclimation period that has been recommended by the MHSAA. This will allow for a gradual return to sports in preparation for the fall season.
    • Day 1-7: One 2-hour practice per day (This means only one sport during this time period.)
    • Day 8-14: Two practices per day, not to exceed 3 hours. (Three-hour cool down period between the two sessions. (Two-sport athletes can attend training for both sports during this time period.)
    • Complete guidelines for returning to sports can be found at misshsaa.com
  • Sports will concentrate on strength and conditioning through weights and conditioning drills.
  • Equipment used will be cleaned between uses.
  • Athletes will meet outside and be sent to assigned areas or groups by the coaching staff.
  • Athletes will not be allowed in locker rooms.
  • Athletes must attend dressed to practice or workout.
  • Athletes must bring their own water bottles.
  • Athletes will use restrooms one at a time.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available to all sports at locations set up by the coaching staff.
  • Athletes can bring masks but should NOT wear them when working out.
  • Social distancing will be practiced.
  • Facilities will be sanitized daily.
  • *If your child has a fever or has been around an individual with Covid-19, please do not send them to athletic practices for the protection of others.

New students to the Pearl Public School District

  • Any new student wishing to participate in sports can schedule a meeting with the building principal to show proof of residency and an up-to-date physical. The principal will then notify the head coach of the sport, who will contact the parent. The parent must still schedule a meeting at the PPSD central office in July to formally enroll their child in the school district.
