Dr. Lydia Malone, Pearl High School Class of 2004, serves as pastor of Christian education at The Outpour Center, a church in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Having a particular interest in integrative pedagogy, she helps craft and implement discipleship resources that speak to urgent issues of our time.

Malone’s 11th grade English teacher, Mrs. Donna Foster, played a large part in inspiring her decision to enter the field of Christian education. “Seasoned in craft and caring in approach, Mrs. Foster was an authentic, adaptable, resilient, and present educator. She possessed everything one could hope for in a teacher. Mrs. Foster taught us how to excel academically and communally, and she continues to encourage many of us today.”

After graduating from Pearl, Malone attended Rust College, a historically black college in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she earned a B.A. in English/Liberal Arts. She continued her education by earning a Master of Divinity at Duke Divinity School. While there, she was privileged to study in Israel, serve in Kenya, and explore vocations like hospital chaplaincy, college chaplaincy, non-profit work, and local church ministry. After graduating, Malone moved back to Mississippi and worked as a chaplain and academic editor before she began to serve as the pastor of Christian education at The Outpour Center. Soon after, she returned to Duke to earn her Doctor of Ministry in 2021.

Dr. Malone is the daughter of Earnest and Sheryl Malone. She has two sisters, Natalie and Cecilia, and is the aunt of four nieces and nephews, Destiny, Nathaniel, Bella-Grace, and Isaiah.

What advice do you have for current students/graduating seniors? “Guard your reputation. Sometimes a good name can take you further than a good grade.”
